As a valuable synthetic procedure the Favorskii rearrangement, and its variant the quasi-Favorskii rearrangement, has been known for more than a hundred years. The Favorskii rearrangement occurs by treating α-halo ketones with bases and converting the formed intermediates into carboxylic acids or their derivatives through formation of cyclopropanones, which normally give the thermodynamically more stable carbanions following cleavage of the three-membered ring (Scheme 17).
