Du, H.Science of Synthesis: Metal-Catalyzed Cyclization Reactions, (20162261.

Numerous chiral Lewis acid catalysts have been successfully developed for the enantioselective Diels–Alder and hetero-Diels–Alder reactions. These reactions provide diverse optically active six-membered carbocyclic, oxacyclic, and azacyclic compounds in a convenient fashion. Significantly, in some cases, the catalyst loading can reach an extremely low level, which makes these catalytic systems more practical. Notably, some chiral Lewis acid catalysts have been applied in the total synthesis of various natural products and biologically important compounds. Despite these advances, the exploration of novel catalyst systems with high chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivity at low catalyst loadings, and the practical application of Diels–Alder or hetero-Diels–Alder reactions in total synthesis and industrial processes are still very important subject areas in this field.
