General Introduction

Hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds has been employed as a fundamental tool for organic synthesis. The reaction plays an important role in the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. Molecular hydrogen would be an ideal reductant from the viewpoint of atom economy as well as cost efficiency, while various other reducing agents have been developed (see Section 1.4.2 for transfer hydrogenation). As a consequence, the development of efficient catalysts for hydrogenation is an important subject in both academia and industry.
