Hydrogenation of alkenes is frequently used in organic synthesis. Commonly, the reaction is carried out with a heterogeneous palladium catalyst, but in more recent years, transition-metal complexes such as [Rh(bisphosphine)(cod)]+ have also often been used as catalysts. The stereoselectivity and/or site selectivity of the reaction are readily controlled by modulating the spectator ligand of the homogeneous catalyst. In recent years, the use of NHCs for alkene hydrogenation has been reported by many researchers.
