Cyclopolymerization reactions use metathesis to polymerize diynes into polymers containing rings, such as polymers of five- or six-membered rings from hepta-1,6-diyne monomers.[‌120‌] Formation of 1,2-(cyclopent-1-enylene)vinylene or 1,3-(cyclohex-1-enylene)methylidene polymers (via intermediates 45 and 46, respectively) from hepta-1,6-diynes depends on the regiochemistry of the insertion of the monomer in the formation of the metallocyclobutane intermediate (Scheme 21).[‌121‌]
