General Introduction

The oxidation of organic substrates is typically carried out at an industrial level with reagents such as permanganate (MnO4), chromium(VI) oxide, or osmium(VIII) oxide that are not only expensive but also environmentally unfriendly. In addition, the use of such reagents involves the generation of a significant amount of side products, thus making the whole process poor from an atom-economy perspective.[‌1‌] The use of water as an oxygen source for the oxidation of substrates[‌2‌,‌3‌] can potentially circumvent all of these problems by providing an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route with very high atom economy. Furthermore, if the side product generated is hydrogen gas, it can be used for energy applications.[‌4‌,‌5‌]
