Under typical Tsuji–Wacker conditions,[‌5‌] the Wacker oxidation of terminal alkenes proceeds with modest ketone selectivity over the corresponding aldehyde. The mixture of carbonyl products results from poorly selective Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov addition of water to the alkene. Efforts to improve the ketone selectivity of the Wacker oxidation of terminal alkenes, as well as the development of milder reaction conditions, are discussed below.
