A wide range of microbes have demonstrated the ability to resolve secondary alcohols by oxidation. Li and co-workers have reported a highly regio- and enantioselective one-pot procedure for the oxidation of cyclic vicinal diols 27 (Scheme 17).[‌60‌] The oxidation is facilitated by recombinant bacteria Escherichia coli expressing butane-2,3-diol dehydrogenase (BDHA), originally derived from Bacillus subtilis. The corresponding (R)-α-hydroxy ketone products are obtained in >99% ee. The unreacted diols (S,S)-27 are also obtained with equally good selectivity.
