1.3.2 Reduction of Polycyclic Arenes

DOI: 10.1055/sos-SD-226-00066

Dai, X.; Shi, F.Science of Synthesis: Catalytic Reduction in Organic Synthesis, (20171135.

Thermodynamic and kinetic studies have shown that the reduction of polyarenes is easier than that of benzene under moderate reaction conditions.[‌35‌] Polycyclic arenes can be reduced to the corresponding hydrogenated ring systems in the presence of metal catalysts such as ruthenium, rhodium, platinum, and palladium, as well as non-metal catalysts such as borane and Lewis pairs.
