Ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru-NPs) stabilized by triphenylphosphine are competent reduction catalysts in the transformation of polycyclic arenes 14 containing two to four rings into hydrogenated products 15 under mild reaction conditions (Table 1).[‌37‌] Good to excellent selectivities can be obtained by optimizing the reaction conditions. Reduction of substrates bearing substituents at the 1-position is slower than that of substrates bearing substituents at the 2-position. In all cases, reduction takes place mainly at the less-substituted ring.
