Well-defined homogeneous catalysts usually show selectivities superior to those obtained with heterogeneous catalysts. This is especially true for the synthesis of complex fine chemicals on a laboratory scale. Only a few examples are known for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatic compounds. Recently, Beller and co-workers reported the use of a homogeneous iron-based catalyst synthesized from iron(II) tetrafluoroborate hexahydrate and phosphine ligand 12.[‌55‌] The ligand is not commercially available, but can be prepared from readily available starting materials in a one-pot procedure (Scheme 4),[‌56‌,‌57‌] in a variation of a protocol that dates back to 1963.[‌58‌]
