Trichloro(η5-cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) (79) has been synthesized by a redistribution reaction between dichlorobis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) (78) and titanium(IV) chloride. This is a convenient method for the preparation of the trichloride complex, since both starting materials are commercially available. The reaction is most conveniently carried out, in ca. 70% yield, if dichlorobis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) (78) is heated with titanium(IV) chloride in xylene at near reflux. The yield of the redistribution reaction is lower if the solvent is not extremely dry or if the mixture is not worked up in a dry atmosphere.[175]
