As mentioned in Section 2.11, at least 70–80% of known organozirconium and -hafnium compounds are zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives, respectively, and their chemistry is discussed in this section and in Sections 2.11.5–2.11.10. This section deals with the zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives of zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) that can be represented by [M(Cp)2XY]. However, zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives where the metal is part of a five-membered ring (Section 2.11.5), zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives containing carbene, carbyne, nitrene, and other ligands doubly and triply bonded to zirconium or hafnium (Section 2.11.6), cationic zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives of oxidation state +4 (Section 2.11.7), and “ate” complexes containing zirconocene and hafnocene (Section 2.11.10) as well as zirconocene and hafnocene derivatives of oxidation states +2 and +3 (Section 2.11.8 and 2.11.9) are discussed in the indicated sections.
