As mentioned in Sections 8.2.6.3 and 8.2.9.3, the reductive cleavage of organomercury compounds by sodium can also be used for the synthesis of organosodium derivatives. The method, however, has only a historical interest; generally, the mercury–alkali metal exchange is used only for the preparation of limited amounts of salt-free organosodium compounds. As an example, benzylsodium (1) is obtained by reaction of dibenzylmercury with sodium in hexane (Scheme 3).[17]
