α,α-Disulfones and α-nitro sulfones usually give sodium salts (e.g., 1 and 2) on contact with sodium alkoxides (preformed sodium tert-butoxide is most effective) in alcohol or tetrahydrofuran solution. In the case of less-acidic reagents, sodium hydride in dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide is preferred. The preparation of sodium salts of dinitroalkanes is also achieved by simple deprotonation with sufficiently strong bases. Both sodium methoxide and sodium ethoxide in a solution of alcohol and diethyl ether have been used for this purpose (Scheme 1). The sodium salts of dinitroalkanes (e.g., 3) precipitate from the solvent mixture. The products, despite a risk of explosion, have been isolated in pure form on a millimolar scale by filtration or evaporative removal of solvents;[9,10] however, on a larger scale considerable caution is advised.
