The condensation of indoles (e.g., 47) with diketones (e.g., 48) is a much utilized synthesis of carbazoles.[‌68‌] The reaction is acid catalyzed and has been reported predominantly for electron-rich indoles substituted with methoxy or dimethyl substituents (Scheme 21).[‌68‌] Yields range from 36 to 45% and this is the preferred method of choice for the synthesis of 1,4-dimethyl-9H-carbazoles.[‌69‌,‌70‌]
