Polycyclic pyridines, bipyridines, e.g. 52,[‌91‌] and oligopyridines are obtained in a one-pot procedure (domino reaction) by the condensation of a ketone, e.g. 50, with a Mannich salt, e.g. 51, in the presence of ammonium acetate in ethanol (Scheme 16). The yields are moderate (3171%); however, the procedure is rather simple.[‌91‌,‌92‌] Cyclic 1,2- or 1,3-diones with α-methylene groups can also be used in this pyridine synthesis.
