Diethyl methylphosphonates can be lithiated and the corresponding salts react with ­nitriles to give primary enaminophosphonates 104 which can be isolated and separately (NCC + CCC process, see Section reacted with α,β-unsaturated ketones (e.g., chalcones) to give tetrasubstituted pyridines 105 (Scheme 37). Yields are slightly lower if this condensation is performed in the same pot.[‌163‌,‌164‌]
