The base-induced hydrogen–deuterium exchange in pyridine is much easier than in benzene, with the hydrogen at the 4-position of pyridine being easier to exchange than H3 or H2.[699,700] Direct hydrogen–deuterium exchange of pyridines with deuterium oxide can be effected at 200 to 400°C.
