When 6-oxo-6-phenylhexanoic acid (28) is refluxed with acetic anhydride and sodium acetate (Perkin conditions), the mixed anhydride 29 is formed and undergoes elimination to form the ketene 30. This reacts by [2+2]-intramolecular cycloaddition to form an intermediate β-lactone 31 that undergoes decarboxylation to give the 1-phenylcyclopentene (32) (Scheme 9).[‌54‌]
