Mercury alkoxides can be prepared in high yields by addition of mercury(II) acetate to terminal alkenes, such as hex-1-ene, dissolved in aqueous tetrahydrofuran or methanol. The analogous palladium compounds are unstable in these solutions and after reductive elimination precipitate palladium metal to form ketones (see Section 26.1.2.1.2). A one-pot combination of these two reactions for the direct conversion of alkenes into ketones has been reported. Using this method, ketones 1 are obtained in good yields (Scheme 1).[1]
