Diaryl ethers are very stable compounds, and are widely employed as solvents in reactions that are carried out at very high temperatures. Extreme reaction temperatures (>400°C) are required to rearrange diaryl ethers into phenols, and these reactions afford mainly the ortho-rearrangement products in moderate yields. Moreover, the photochemical version of the reaction usually affords mixtures of ortho- and para-substituted phenols as well as small amounts of their parent phenols. The relative ortho/para ratio strongly depends upon the reactions conditions.[20,21]
