A wide range of reagents and reaction systems has been shown to reduce aldehydes (and ketones) to alkanols through single-electron-transfer mechanisms, although dimerization of the radical intermediate, to provide pinacol products, can be a particular problem for aldehyde substrates, and is often difficult to prevent.
