The problem of the selectivity in the formation of geminal bishydroperoxides (see Section 38.11.2) was first solved by using ketals or enol ethers as starting reagents in reactions with hydrogen peroxide. Synthetic approaches that have been reported for the preparation of geminal bishydroperoxides 23 from ketals 22 include the use of tungstic acid (H2WO4),[71] boron trifluoride–diethyl ether complex,[72,73] and phosphomolybdic acid [H3Mo12O40P•xH2O] as catalysts (Scheme 11).[74]
