In recent years, salts that are liquids at room temperature, ionic liquids, have attracted extensive attention, as they can combine the advantages of both homogeneous catalysis (e.g., high reactivity) and heterogeneous catalysis (e.g., facile recovery and reusability of the catalyst).[‌82‌] Ionic liquids applied as reaction media, catalysts, or reagents meet all requirements of green chemistry since they are nonvolatile and several of them are recyclable and do not leave any hazardous waste on workup.[‌83‌] Combining the advantages of ionic liquids and multicomponent reactions seems to be a straightforward step toward the “ideal synthesis”[‌84‌] and the Biginelli reaction has become a testing area for novel and task-specific ionic liquids.
