Besides the epoxide and carbonyl functional group, a π-bond also can be used to generate a carbocation. Due to its special nucleophilicity, the π-bond is capable of reacting with various electrophiles such as a proton, Lewis acid, π-acid, or halonium to initiate a domino transformation. Similarly, such a process involving a ring-closure procedure can be terminated with a nucleophile or a rearrangement.
