General Introduction

The Pauson–Khand reaction is a rare example of a transformation that in one step produces a great increase in molecular complexity;[‌1‌‌4‌] only a few other transformations, such as the Diels–Alder reaction or the cyclotrimerization of alkynes, can compete. The Pauson–Khand reaction occurs by the (2 + 2 + 1) cycloaddition of a triple bond, a double bond, and carbon monoxide to form a cyclopentenone (Scheme 1). Cyclopentenones are useful synthetic intermediates that can be converted into other structures, e.g. those present in natural products, or subjected to further transformation.
