The Pauson–Khand reaction was first reported in the early 1970s as an unexpected result when trying to obtain new organometallic cobalt complexes.[5] Initially it was performed by heating the alkyne–cobalt cluster with an alkene; this resulted in reactions with generally low efficiency. Until the mid-1990s, octacarbonyldicobalt(0) was the only reagent used to mediate the Pauson–Khand reaction. The large number of byproducts, low yields, and narrow scope delayed the development of this reaction for more than 20 years.
