General Introduction

Organoboron compounds hold a distinctive place in modern organic synthesis because of their high reactivity, coupled with their stability, ease of handling, and low toxicity. Importantly, organoboron reagents can be readily transformed into various functionalized molecules in a stereospecific manner. In this context, chemists have been developing numerous borylation methodologies in recent years. Among them, ring-closing reactions with concomitant incorporation of boryl groups are a particularly important class of transformations because these methods provide efficient routes to various functionalized carbo- and heterocyclic moieties that are ubiquitous in natural and useful nonnatural organic compounds. This chapter provides a brief summary of the recent achievements in metal-catalyzed or boron-mediated borylative ring-closing reactions.
