General Introduction

This review is an update to the previous Science of Synthesis chapter (Section 15.9) on methods for the preparation of acridines.[‌1‌] A separate recent review covered the synthesis and applications of acridinium salts (Section 15.9.4),[‌2‌] and such compounds are not covered here. The structure and numbering of the acridine (1) ring system is shown in Scheme 1.
